(Quick Take) Tasos Stamou- Koura

The subdued electro-acoustic drone of Tasos Stamou‘s Koura, the most recent offering of the always reliable Moving Furniture Records, is certainly a shift from Moving Furniture’s generally very glitchy, noisy output. His latest finds the London-based musician, composer, and sound artist coaxing suspended cosmos from first a zither, then an organ with the help of electronics. Koura is named for a Cretan sheep-shearing ceremony observed in the summer. Lend an ear to the second piece for organ, with its dreamy mutterings that begin to set around a quarter of the way in, and you will no doubt intimate the atmosphere of tradition’s stately dream. A fine intro to a long-active composer and a solid deep-listening excursion worth any drone devotee’s time.

Conjoining Currents: Drone, Electro-Acoustic, Phill Niblock.

Label: Moving Furniture Records
